Queen’s speech promises national recovery

The Queen set out the Government's plan for the state opening of Parliament before the House of Lords in her annual speech yesterday.

The speech set out that the "Government's priority is to deliver a national recovery from the pandemic" that makes the UK "more prosperous than before".

The Queen offered little insight into specific policy, however, saying that the Government will "level up opportunities" across the UK to support jobs, businesses and economic growth.

She also referred to future legislation to "create and support jobs and improve regulation", later adding:

"My Government will ensure that the public finances are returned to a sustainable path once the economic recovery is secured".

Again, she did not indicate any policy changes, including tax increases, spending cuts or changes to the Bank of England's monetary policy.

She also described how her ministers will oversee the "biggest increase in public funding for research and development" and establish an "advanced research agency".

Plans to build more homes and ban ground rents for new leasehold properties to achieve greater home ownership were also announced while the building of eight new free ports were promised to "help regenerate communities".
